Where is your focus?

Puneet and Umesh were close friends. They shared many habits; for instance, both kept a daily journal. Both came from lower-middle-class families and practiced small savings. They also shared the habit of praying to the Almighty every morning and always completed their work on time.

Time eventually separated them; they settled in different cities, yet their friendship and mutual contact remained intact.

As time passed, their paths in life diverged. Umesh became a highly successful businessman, while Puneet held an ordinary job.

Once, when Umesh visited Puneet’s city for work, he got in touch and arranged to meet him. The two friends reunited after years, yet the affection between them remained unchanged.

During their conversation, Puneet asked Umesh about the secret to his success.

Umesh enthusiastically showed Puneet his journal and said, "This is the secret to my success!"

Puneet exclaimed, "Wow! So, you still write in your journal every day? I do too."

Revealing the secret, Umesh explained, "Puneet, every day I write down three things I am grateful for in my journal. I believe this is one of the reasons for my success."

Realizing his mistake, Puneet said, "You are right, Umesh! But my journal is filled only with complaints. It feels as though nothing good has ever happened in my life."

Umesh asked in surprise, "What are you saying? Has nothing good really happened in your life?" Puneet said, "It’s not that nothing good happened; my wife is wonderful, loving, and caring, my children are lovely, and I have a home of my own—even if it is small. I’ve realized that I was simply caught up in complaints, while you were focusing on the blessings."

Puneet asked, "Do you do anything else besides that?"

Umesh replied, "Do you remember, Puneet, that apart from our daily routine, we shared another habit—praying to the Almighty? In our prayers, we either praise God, express gratitude, or ask for something. My friend, I make an effort to thank God in my prayers."

"You are right again, Umesh. In my prayers, I used to do nothing but ask; I never expressed gratitude for what I had received," Puneet said remorsefully. "From now on, I too will write down the good things in my life in my daily journal and offer thanks to God in my prayers."

Puneet added, "And I offer my first thanks to you, my friend, for sharing these secrets of success with me."

Both friends laughed at this lovely beginning.
