Uma and Manish had been married for ten years, yet their relationship was notorious for constant conflict; not a single day went by without an argument. Their quarrels took a toll on their sons, their health, and even their careers.
Both were highly educated professionals working for multinational companies on large-scale projects. The only challenge was managing this lifelong project called 'marriage.'
Acting on the advice of Uma’s brother, Pawan, they decided to seek professional counseling.
Rajesh, a colleague of Manish, had also faced turmoil in his own life. Manish knew Rajesh had sought professional help, so he asked him about it. Rajesh gave him the contact details of his counselor, 'Parag Sir.' Manish called Para Sir and scheduled an appointment.
Nothing significant happened during the first session, but Sir gave both of them a chance to speak their minds. They both expressed themselves frankly while Parag Sir took notes.
In the next counseling session, Sir asked them to work on specific exercises throughout the week so they could make the most of the time between appointments.
He then assigned a task for the week: they were to try and view situations from the other person's perspective. Whenever an incident occurred, they were to observe what the other person was going through or what their mental state was. Manish asked when they should do this. Parag Sir explained, "For instance, if one of you gets angry, the other should simply try to see things from that person's point of view. Or, even if a person's reaction seems unfair, try to look at the situation from their perspective."
Uma then asked a pointed question: "But how will we know what the other person's perspective is?" So, Parag Sir said, "This isn't a difficult task. Just pause for a moment when a situation arises—ask yourself why the other person is acting that way and make a genuine effort to understand it. We’ll meet again after a week of practicing this."
Uma and Manish were very eager to undertake this task, and an opportunity presented itself almost immediately. The very next day, when Uma lost her temper at something, Manish initially felt angry too; however, he then remembered he needed to view the situation from Uma's perspective. He recalled how during her periods, Uma often got hormonals imbalance, causing Uma to become irritable and sometimes fly into a rage over trivial matters. As soon as he looked at it this way—remembering Uma was having periods —Manish’s anger vanished, and he actually felt empathy for her.
Then, the very next day, Manish flared up over something minor Uma said. Uma’s temper rose too, but she immediately remembered the advice to pause and reflect. She wondered if Manish had had a conflict at work; perhaps he had hinted at this earlier. While they were watching a web series together after dinner, a scene showed the protagonist’s boss berating him, and Manish had remarked, "That’s just how bosses are." Uma understood why he had snapped.
They continued practicing this approach throughout the week. While it wasn't as though they had no arguments at all, the frequency and intensity of their disputes did decrease.
Then came the next session with Parag Sir. He first reviewed their experiences and then assigned them a task for the following week. Explaining the situation to both of them, Parag Sir said, "Husbands and wives usually come from different backgrounds and have different upbringings. So, this week, the focus is on trying to understand each other."
Uma then asked, "How does one deal with a situation where a spouse refuses something based on their background or upbringing?" Parag Sir replied, "That is a tricky situation."
Manish noted that Uma had been raised with strict discipline, and there had never been any distinction made between her and her brother.
Meanwhile, Uma reflected on the fact that Manish had grown up in a very liberal environment, whereas in her family, the son was given more importance than the daughter.
The conflict between Uma and Manish often stemmed from issues regarding their son. Uma was very strict with their son, while Manish was generally more lenient. Manish would tell Uma, "You try to control him too much." Uma would counter, "You don't say anything to him; he manages to get his way, even when I’ve said no."
When a similar dispute arose this week, the approach shifted from mutual recrimination to an attempt at understanding. Yet, the core problem remained: how to handle the situation with their son?
The answer came the following week from Parag Sir: "Scholars say 'Ati Sarvatra Varjayet'—meaning extremes are always bad. So, don't be overly strict, and don't be too lenient either. Also, show respect for each other in front of your son; if one of you says something, the other should back it up."
The major source of the conflict was the issue regarding their son—a problem that significantly subsided by the second and third weeks. In reality, the very son whose life they both wanted to shape was the reason for their conflict; their fighting had drawn him in and ultimately driven him away. Consequently, they blamed each other for the situation regarding their son.
They each made only slight changes to themselves, yet the impact was profound.
In the fourth week, Parag Sir explained to both of them, "We often try to change the other person but fail. Rather, in every relationship, we must accept others exactly as they are. So, all you need to do is avoid judging each other. Whenever you catch yourself judging the other person, immediately remind yourself that you are not supposed to judge, but to accept."
Manish asked, "That would require staying mindful and conscious all the time!" Parag Sir replied, "And that will benefit every aspect of your life."
Parag Sir continued, "You mentioned that you both practice meditation. That is good, but now you must also practice 'paying attention'. You need to live life with awareness, not just in a routine flow. You must live with awareness, not on 'autopilot'."
The following week, both of them tried to operate with awareness instead of being on autopilot. Whenever they found themselves judging someone, they would immediately remember not to do so. As a result, things began to improve—not just between the two of them, but in their interactions with others as well.
Later, when they met Parag Sir for the closing session, he said, "They say there is only a one-letter difference between 'vivah' (marriage) and 'vivad' (conflict), but in reality, the two often go hand in hand—as if they were one and the same. However, with a little wisdom, a husband and wife can eliminate conflict from their marriage. You both deserve congratulations for achieving this."
Uma said, "Parag Sir, you are wonderful." Manish echoed her sentiment, prompting Parag Sir to laugh and ask, "So, are you judging me?" They both replied in unison, "No, Sir! We are giving feedback."
